Research Blog: Music Video Conventions
My music video is with the song Kids by Current Joys. Current Joys is in reality 28 year old Nick Rattigan, who has been releasing music under this name since 2013. His music falls under the Indie Rock genre. Rattigan is also part of a band entitled Surf Curse that was formed in 2013.
Conventions of this genre are more limited compared to Pop or Hip hop. Indie music videos commonly involve the artist doing a live performance. The main focus is the artist and them doing what they love. This allows the audience to interpret the song however they want. The indie genre is very focused on the art that each person creates rather than looking for fame or success.
Another popular convention for indie music videos is narrative style. This type of music video usually still includes scenes of the artists themselves at a live performance but provides a story to match as well. It can also be a full story without the artist at a live performance. This brings more creativeness and uniqueness from the artist into the music and engagement with the audience.
Within the songs and lyrics themselves there is also conventions. Indie genre songs are mostly about love, human relationships and interactions. Songs are very raw and unique to the artists real life. They are so unique that indie music has been literally defined as an independent music style. This pertains to the music being backed by lesser known labels but also its one of a kind style of music. Although during the 1980's indie music became mainstream it remains predominantly unique and experimental. Lyrics tend to relate to audiences on deeper levels than regular superficial music.
