Genre Research: The Purge

In the film, The Purge, thriller elements were found throughout. Majority of the movie was filmed with low

key lighting, or even with just the light of a flashlight. This raises the attention of the audience seeing that

it causes them to focus on one thing, yet look for details. During the action and killing scenes, the camera

movement continued to be handheld, making the viewers feel as though they were truly there. There were

also tilted and canted angles during this scene to show the audience a full view and experience, while

making them feel uneasy to the unknown angles. When looking at the common costume and mask in this

movie, it can be most closely associated with danger and death. These costumes are now a staple in the

Purge franchise and now famously known around the world. When watching this movie, there was an

abundance of ambient sounds when the characters were not talking to smoothly tie the scenes together.

They also expressed tension and suspense within the viewer. One of the elements of this film that

appealed to us was the plot itself of the film. The plot consisted of very sinister and frightening elements

that keeps an audience intrigued throughout the entire movie. Such elements of this plot include being able

to participate in any kind of criminal activity and it is legal. This is new to the audience therefore captivating

the attention even more. Another element that this film contained that we liked was the suspense and the

tension throughout the film. The audience does not know what is going to happen as the villains of the

movie enter the house and are eager to find out, increasing the stake of the protagonist and his family.

This generates tension and suspense in the people viewing this film. The element we disliked the most

from this film was the violence, specifically the killing scenes. These scenes were especially violent and

include a lot of blood, and gore. Exposing audiences to this type of violence can be psychologically

damaging but can also produce fear and disgust. Another aspect of the film we did not like were the

many cliches that were covered. The most common one being the teenagers of the film making incorrect

decisions and rebelling against their parents. When watching a thriller movie, audiences want and expect

a storyline that will keep them on the edge of their seat. Most audiences are not concerned with teenagers

arguing with parents or making bad decisions, audiences just want to see the true plot unfold.

The most noticeable being editing and background sounds. The editing allows the audience to become more engaged with the commercial and the product. Finding Fonts

 Once I returned from my trip, there was a time we were not filming. I took advantage of this and began looking for fonts that would fit our opening sequence. I am editing on iMovie, so I looked into the fonts that are offered on there. I couldn't find any fonts that matched the ideas we had previously come up with. I spoke with my group about the font issue, and we looked into other editing platforms. It turned out that iMovie was the easiest place for all of us to edit. So, I became more open minded about the fonts that we had on iMovie. I started experimenting with the different fonts. To do this, I selected one of the clips from what we had previously filmed and put it into iMovie. Once there, I uploaded the clip into a new project and made sure it was the correct length to display the title. Then, I went to the title and fonts option and tested many different fonts. Commercial Planning

  1. Props - The commercial is about Nintendo Switch the main prop will be the Switch and the Joy-Cons. Other props will include the Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch dock, a high speed HDMI cable, the Joy-Con grip, headphones, and the AC adapter.  2. Costumes - The commercial will include three people. The three subjects will be wearing casual everyday clothes. The outfits will most likely be t-shirts or sweatshirts, jeans and leggings, and sneakers.  3. Schedule 10/21/20 - Decide what I will do the commercial on and begin researching for it.
