Music and Editing Planning

Since I am working with three other people for this final task, we knew it would be difficult for everyone to edit the same opening sequence. We decided to either split the scenes up into sections and each of us edits those sections or work together to edit. The editing process is going to be lengthy for this task. I thought that planning out beforehand was vital for our editing to go smoothly. One of the first things we began planning was the music we would include. I knew many songs are copyrighted and we would have to contact the companies who own these songs in order to use them. However, some of our music, like the eerie tones we wanted to us, could be easily found with no copyright to them. For the scenes that Jane is seen with headphones on we all envisioned a well known track playing. I thought back to copyright issues and spoke with my group about it. We began researching if there was any music with lyrics that we could use. In the end, we made the decision to not include this type of music since I did not find any copyright-free songs that were fitting for our task. I decided that contacting these companies would require longer time period and I did not want to risk not receiving a reply in time to edit.

This brought a sense of relief over our group because none of us had experience with adding music over specific scenes once in editing. Without these options, we had to brainstorm new ideas for the scenes that Jane wears her headphones. One of my group mates suggested making the scene silent. She explained that this would raise tensions and would also show that Jane was always extremely worried of her actions. The silence would represent Jane unable to concentrate on even simple things such as music because of the guilt of her actions. This experience demonstrated to me that we needed to research editing techniques further. I looked into how to create the point of view scenes along with one of my group members. The other members researched background music and creating a silencing effect when Jane puts on her headphones. Hopefully with the knowledge we’ve acquired our final task will come out as we have been planning and envisioning.
